Mr B.J Mkhaliphi takes the reigns at Msukaligwa Municipality

Mr BJ Mkhaliphi (Executive Mayor: Msukaligwa Municipality) congratulated by Ms MP Nkosi (Executive Speaker: Msukaligwa Municipality).

Msukaligwa Municipality has a new mayor.

Mr Buti Joseph Mkhaliphi , affectionately known as “BJ”, is the new man at the helm and Msukaligwa’s first citizen.

Born in 1955 in the small town of Chrissiesmeer, he is a local boy at heart and a familiar face in political circles.

Mr Mkhaliphi comes from humble beginnings, beginning in the administrative structures of the Lothair Rural Council, where he served 24 years in different capacities as Clerk, Senior Clerk and Administration Officer.

A true academic, he holds numerous qualifications which will help him in the public office.

He holds a Certificate in Municipal Administration which he earned at Unisa.

He also boasts a Certificate in Oversight Responsibilities of Legislators with InWent, an institution with worldwide operations in the field of bilateral development cooperation and international, based in Berlin, Germany.

His political career began at the South African Civic Organisation (Sanco), where he was a fully fledged member.

That led him to eventually joining the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), in 1990.

He has held many positions in the regional ANC, having served as Branch Secretary in his ward from 1991 to 1996.

He climbed the political ladder, leading him towards ANC Ermelo Region Regional Secretary were he served for two years from 1996 to 1998.

His leadership skills were acknowledged when he was chosen to lead the ruling party in the Ermelo region and served as chairman.

Currently, he is the Chairman of the Sithawalandwe Branch in Ermelo, Ward 8.

Not only has he served in regional political seats, he is a Member of Parliament (MP).

He was a MP in the National Council of Provinces for 10 years.

During his tenure, he served in various portfolio committees such as the Local Government Committee and the Joint Budget Committee, where he was chairman.

He was appointed Executive Mayor of Msukaligwa Municipality on 27 October, taking over from Mr MS Nkosi.

Mr Nkosi resigned with immediate effect last month.

The ANC said he had been deployed to another position.

Mr Mkhaliphi takes over as the municipality is in crisis with service delivery woes at the forefront.

His credentials speak for themselves and his experience in the political world will help him in office as the municipality pushes to reach their goal of enhancing community participation, stimulating local economy, improving service standards through adopting ethos of good governance, enhancing effectiveness and efficiency in the utility of available resources and empowering its communities.

When he is not in the office, the mayor is a God-fearing family man.

Eldest son of a preacher, he has followed in his father’s footsteps as he also has assisted in preaching in the church.

An avid reader, people close to him say he is a fountain of knowledge.

“ Thank you to my party for bestowing on me this huge responsibility of driving this municipality forward,” he said.

“I want to assure the residents of Msukaligwa, I will do my utmost best for the betterment of our communities.”
