GDSM hosts media network session for media houses and government communicators

Journalists and communicators of various government sectors from around the province came together last Thursday at the Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) mayor’s parlour, in a media workshop and networking session.

The purpose was to strengthen relations between local municipalities and media houses.

The communications unit of GSDM hosted the dinner.

Municipal Manager, Mr CA Habile, opened proceedings, welcoming all present.

MMC for Community and Social Services, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa, stood in for the Executive Mayor, Mr Muzi Chirwa, giving the keynote address and offering words of support to media personnel in attendance.

“The district municipality has only now begun understanding how important our relationship with the media is.

“It is very important that whenever we table a budget, we include the communications unit as well to improve and help communicators of our municipalities.”

A Q-and-A session saw journalists voicing their opinions, difficulties and suggestions about reporting on government stories with the most notable being their frustration when information is not forthcoming .

Government communicators replied to questions asked and tabled suggestions.

“This is just one of many more sessions we are going to hold,” Mr Habile said.

A networking session was held after formal proceedings where journalists interacted on a more personal level with municipal officials.
