Theft of lights becomes a real headache

Lights are stolen from the runway daily. This can cause serious problems for pilots when landing or taking off.

Thieves stealing the runway lights at Ermelo airfield leaves this airstrip vulnerable.

Altogether six threshold lights, that indicate the start and end of the runway, and seven sets of lights on both sides of the runway, covering 700m, were stolen over a period of 10 days.

The financial implication is R55 000.

The thieves use the cable, bulbs and covers in their houses as wiring.

No airplane can land or take off at night from runway 13.

The management of the aviation club still has to report it to the police.
